Creating a Balloon Banner/Garland

Have you ever wanted to create a balloon banner/garland for some fabulous party you were hosting, but just didn’t know where to start?!?  Us too!  We searched for easy tutorials on how to create what we were envisioning for our Super Bowl 2019 Party (Patriots vs Rams), but just couldn’t find anything we loved!  So we created our own, which brings us to this post that we want to share with all of you in case you ever wanted to diy…creating a balloon banner/garland tutorial!

Step 1: Gather all of your supplies.

  • Balloons!  We used 12 inch balloons in this banner with varying colors.  We decided we wanted an inclusive Super Bowl Party with both teams represented so we decided to have red, blue, silver, and white balloons to represent the Patriots and yellow and blue balloons to represent the Rams since they will be wearing their throwback uniforms.
  • Fishing Line. We used 30# Omniflex for this creation, which is thicker and worked great for stability while building the banner, but is heavy for hanging.  Look around your house and see what fishing line you already have and go from there.
  • Balloon Buddy Pump!  I need to first start by telling you that this is AMAZING!!! Seriously, if you are blowing up more than 10 balloons for a party, you need this in your life!  We have tried other air compressors and multiple sets of lungs, but this purchase was worth every cent…especially if you are going to create something with lots of balloons!

Step 2:  Blow up each balloon.  SO easy and fun with the balloon buddy, our kids were all about it! We varied the size of our balloons, but the size, type, and style can easily changed.

Step 3: Tie each balloon

Step 4: Take two balloons you would want next to each other and tie them together.

*Your two balloons should be connected like the picture below.

Step 5:  Stabilize one end of your garland.  We used our kitchen cabinets and wrapped the fishing line around the knobs until it was stable.

Step 6: These next 3 steps are where you connect your balloons to your fishing line so pay attention or they might fall off!  First, take one of your balloons that you tied together in step 4 and place it above the fishing line.

Step 7:  Then take the balloon in your left hand and wrap it under the wire.

Step 8:  Then rotate the balloon back up to the left side!  Easy as that, now you have 2 balloons connected to your fishing line and the start of your banner/garland!!!!!

Step 9:  Repeat steps 6-8 until you reach your desired length of banner/garland you are creating.  You might have to untie the stable side and measure where you are hanging the balloon banner to see how it is looking.

Step 10:  Hang your completed balloon banner!  Ah, we love it!  We suggest you use command hooks that can attach and detach to your wall so it has a secure anchor to hang, but depending on where you put it, the hanging part will differ.

Everyone we talked to before creating this balloon banner told us how hard they were, but we were pleasantly surprised and thought this tutorial was worth sharing in hopes it will inspire you to try one yourself!  Good luck and follow us on instagram @inspired2party for more party ideas and diy parties.
